KUCHING: Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) launched a tertiary education assistance scheme of RM1,500 on Friday (Feb 10) for students in Stampin and Bandar Kuching who want to continue their studies to a higher level.

Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen, who is also the Stampin MP, said the aid was available to students continuing their studies at diploma or degree level at local universities or colleges.

“However, the aid is subject to availability of existing funds allocated by the federal government to the two parliamentarians involved.

“We are expecting between 200 and 300 students applying for the funds and applications are now open,” he told reporters here.

“The applicant must be a Malaysian citizen with the parents’ monthly income not exceeding RM7,000.

“Applicants must be residents of Stampin or Bandar Kuching with the same address as displayed on their identity cards.

“In order to apply for the aid, the applicant needs to submit a form with a copy of the identity card of the applicant and applicant’s parents, along with a letter of offer of admission to the university or college.

“For applicants who are studying at the moment, they need to submit the transcript of the previous semester,” Chong explained.

He added that other documents and information required would be phone numbers and addresses, payslips, income tax returns or statements from the parents’ Employees Provident Fund (EPF).

“Application forms can be obtained at the Kuching DAP headquarters or my legal firm, Chong Brothers Advocate.”

Also present were Bandar Kuching MP Kelvin Yii, Yii’s special assistant George Lam, Chong’s special assistant Sim Kiat Leng and DAP state assistant organising secretary Tonny Ung.
