The failure of hundreds of thousands of SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) students in subjects like Bahasa Melayu (Malay Language) or Sejarah (History) can be attributed to reading and writing difficulties, according to education specialist Dr Anuar Ahmad.

In an interview with FMT (Free Malaysia Today), the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) senior lecturer highlighted that these weaknesses should ideally be addressed during primary school years.

Anuar urged the Education Ministry to take immediate action in ensuring that all students are equipped with proficient reading and writing skills before completing their primary education.

He pointed out that the transition to secondary school becomes challenging for students as they encounter thick textbooks and complex academic content.

To assess the level of students’ reading and writing abilities, Anuar suggested the implementation of special examinations before students progress to secondary school or reconsidering the decision to abolish the UPSR (Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah or Primary School Achievement Test).
