SIBURAN: The recent education fair at Dewan Rais Kampung Sg. Du’uh Siburan left a positive impression on the students of SMK Tarat, who eagerly shared their thoughts and aspirations.

Many were inspired by  a speech made by Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, Minister for Education, Innovation, and Talent Development.

Latashia Lavedia, a Form 4 student, was happy with  the opportunities presented at the fair.

She highlighted  her interest in pursuing a nursing course.

“I choose this programme because it offers more opportunities for students to work locally.

“Listening to the speeches, especially about the prospects at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), reassures me that I do not need to go overseas to find a job,” she said.

Syarifah Nur Zatil Aqmar and Mikella Frankser, also Form 4 students, were captivated by the idea of studying in the medical field at UNIMAS.

“The YB’s speech was inspiring. I want to become a doctor, specifically a neurosurgeon. The presence of a medical field at UNIMAS is a significant advantage,” said Syarifah.

“I’m interested in UNIMAS, particularly in the psychology course. The speeches today made me happy because I rarely get such opportunities to attend lectures like this,” said Mikella.

For Felicia Marsila, the fair was her second experience of attending such an event. She found the speech by Sagah particularly motivating.

“I am happy and excited about the future opportunities discussed, like CENTEXS because it opens a lot of fields for young people, and the entry requirements are flexible,” she explained.

Sagah emphasised the Sarawak government’s commitment to improving education through initiatives like the Sarawak Education Enhancement Programme (SEEP) and the promotion of English language proficiency and STEM education.

“SEEP aims to elevate our students’ performance to match the national average within five years. This requires the collective effort of teachers, school leaders, parents, and students,” he said.

The fair featured 17 agencies and higher education institutions, including the Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School (YSISS), which follows the Cambridge syllabus and offers a prestigious education within the state.
