SIBU: The Education and Career Fair provides a platform for both students and parents to gather crucial information about various tertiary education options, said Joseph Chieng Jin Ek.

The Bukit Assek assemblyman said through such a programme, parents and students have an opportunity to interact directly with representatives from numerous institutions and universities, explore different programmes, and obtain valuable consultancy from exhibitors.

“Take full advantage of this chance to ask questions, seek advice, and gain a clearer understanding of the pathways available to you,” he said in his speech when officiating at the Education and Career Fair at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Methodist here today.

Chieng stressed that education is the cornerstone of progress and the key to unlocking the potential within each individual.

He said that it is through education that one gains the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to navigate the complexities of current times and contribute to the betterment of society.

“To the students present here, I especially want to address those of you who have recently completed your Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM). This is a critical moment where you will choose the direction of your future.

“While the lure of entering the workforce and earning a pay cheque can be strong, I urge you to consider the long-term benefits of continuing your studies at the tertiary level,” he added.

Pursuing higher education, Chieng said, opens up a world of opportunities as it equips the students with specialised knowledge and skills that are increasingly valuable in today’s competitive job market.

“It allows you to explore your interests in depth, engage with new ideas, and develop critical thinking abilities that will serve you throughout your life.

“Additionally, tertiary education provides a platform for personal growth, fostering independence, resilience, and a sense of responsibility,” he said.

Also present were principal Philip Ling and Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley.
