BETONG: The Bukit Saban state constituency will soon have its Education Trust Board. Its assemblyman cum Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas yesterday said he was ready to give it a launching grant of RM50,000.

“I fully support this noble proposal. Please form your committee and get the board registered with the state government soonest,” he said before presenting financial aid vouchers from Yayasan Sarawak Foundation to students from low income families here.

Earlier, SMK Spaoh principal Muhamed Rais Abang Busamy proposed  setting up of the Bukit Saban Education Trust Board for the benefits of students from one secondary and five primary schools in Spaoh.

He stated its activities would include helping needy students with courses to prepare for public examination and others.

Uggah also reminded parents to help in their children’s education instead of leaving everything to the teachers. He said rural areas in the state like Spaoh needed more educated people to help it  develop and progress further.

“Our beloved state of Sarawak, too ,still needs more graduates, technocrats and professionals to propel it to a developed state by the year 2030. I am glad to note Spaoh has its fair share of state leaders including ministers, elected representatives, many graduates and successful businessmen.

“The very essence of their success is they had simply worked very hard when they were students,” he mentioned.

He further advised students here to emulate them. “Do not be easily influenced or distracted by outside influences, especially the negative ones like drug abuse,” he urged.

At the event, Uggah presented the aid to 150 students selected by the foundation. He also personally sponsored another 139 students who failed to meet its official criteria for the aid.

Also present were deputy director of the foundation Ellen Manium Engang and a political secretary to the chief minister Dr Richard Rapu.
