PUTRAJAYA: The recently passed Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act (EECA) 2023 is set to benefit the nation, particularly in achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050.

The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) in a statement today said that the Act supported energy transition initiatives aimed at achieving net-zero GHG emissions by 2050 within the energy sector.

As a key initiative under the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), the EECA will focus on energy demand management, particularly the efficient and effective use of energy.

“Through the enforcement of this Act in the industrial, commercial, and domestic sectors until 2050, Malaysia can save an estimated 2,017 million gigajoules of energy, equivalent to RM97.1 billion.

“This will directly reduce carbon emissions by 197,877 kilotonnes of carbon dioxide,” according to the statement.

The EECA, which aims to regulate energy use efficiently and promote energy conservation, was passed by Parliament on June 25, 2024.

According to PETRA, the Act will create 1,000 new job opportunities for registered energy managers and energy auditors, on top of the existing ones.

“Additionally, the Act will encourage the establishment of training and skills institutions and energy service companies to train more energy managers and auditors needed by the industrial and commercial sectors,” the statement said.

PETRA noted that the amendments to the Act passed by the Dewan Rakyat would only apply to Peninsular Malaysia and the Federal Territory of Labuan, excluding Sabah and Sarawak. – BERNAMA
