SIBU: Eight local men were arrested after police raided an illegal gambling premises here on Friday night (Oct 20).

Sibu Police Chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said that acting on public information, the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) carried out the operation codenamed ‘Ops Dadu’ at about 10.25 pm.

“On arrival, the police found a group of men aged between 20 and 30, engaged in what is believed to be poker gambling,” he said in a statement yesterday (Oct 21).

Zulkipli said the police seized a poker table, eight chairs, playing cards, betting chips, betting slips, 271 assorted chips and various other confiscated items.

“The suspects and seized items were taken to the police station for further investigation, and the initial police investigation revealed that the premises had been in operation for approximately two days,” he said.

Zulkipli added that the suspects had been remanded for one day until October 22 to assist in the investigation.

Zulkipli said all of the suspects would be investigated under Section 6(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which carries a fine of up to RM5,000 or imprisonment not exceeding six months, or both, if convicted.
