KUCHING: Two Indonesian men were sentenced to eight years’ jail and four lashes each today (25 May) after pleading guilty to robbing a housewife while armed with a meat cleaver.
The Section court judge ordered Dandi Adytia Firnanda, 22, and Romi, 21, to be sentenced after they pleaded guilty under Section 395 of the Penal Code.
The court further ordered the two accused to be handed over to the Immigration Department after they had served their sentences.
The two accused were charged with robbing Siaw Lee Ching, a 60-year-old housewife, of a Redmi Note 8 Pro phone, a necklace, two rings and RM600 cash.
They were armed with a meat cleaver and committed the robbery at Kuching City Mall on May 9 around 4 pm.
Meanwhile, a 21-year-old acquaintance of the accused, known as Sainal from Pontianak, Indonesia was sentenced to six years’ for each charge.
On May 10, Sainal pleaded guilty to two offences under Section 412 of the Penal Code for stealing a white Redmi Note Pro mobile phone belonging to the victim Siaw Lee Ching at 4.15 pm at the Serikin Kampung Stass Sector, approximately 415 metres from the Malaysia/Indonesia border.
The accused also pleaded guilty to possessing a chain and two rings belonging to the victim on May 14 at 11.20 am at IPD Bau.
In his appeal, Sainal pleaded for a reduced sentence and admitted to committing crime. He said he was supporting his father, who was suffering from lung cancer.
According to deputy prosecutor Ruthra Raj, the accused should have looked for a better option to earn money rather than committing robbery.
