Acting on a public tip-off, a team from the Julau Criminal Investigation Division (CID) carried out an operation codenamed ‘Ops Dadu Khas’ at the location around 3 pm.
Julau police chief DSP Andam Sulin Brayun said among those arrested was an 83-year-old man.
“A group of men, who were at the cockfighting arena, were taken by surprise when they realised the presence of the police.
“Seven of them, aged between 29 and 83, were arrested on the spot while, the others managed to flee into a nearby forest,” he said.
Also seized during the raid was three dead roosters, a weighing scale, a piece of board containing a betting schedule, a spur and cash of RM114.
Andam said the case is being investigated under Section 73(1)(g) of the Veterinary Public Health Ordinance 1999, which carries a fine of up to RM2,000, or a prison term of up to six months, or both, upon conviction.
He said police would not compromise with anyone found to be involved in cockfight sessions.
