SONG: A woman in her 90s died in an evening fire that destroyed a 33-door Rh Sebom at Nanga Masak, Ulu Katibas yesterday (Oct 4).
Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Zone 4 chief Andy Alie said the victim, identified as Tungkut Angong, suffered burns on her back and hands.
“According to the residents of the longhouse, the victim was in a frail state of health prior to the fire.
“Her body was handed over to the police for further action,” he said.
He added that the department received an emergency call around 4.45 pm and firemen from Song station were deployed to the scene, some 81 km away.
No extinguishing operation was performed as the fire died down by the time the team arrived around 8.32 pm.
Seven other longhouse residents managed to escape the inferno unharmed.
The team only monitored the situation to ensure that there was no re-ignition and cordoned off the area.
