KUCHING: When an elected representative leaves his/her party and joins another without good cause, it is normally seen as having no principles, said Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Women chief Datuk Chiew Yen Chew.

She said personally, she felt that elected politicians owed loyalty to the people, especially their voters.

“I fully agree with Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah’s statement that it is with credibility and integrity that the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) politicians had stood firm in the current political tradition,” she told New Sarawak Tribune on Tuesday.

She was commenting on the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) vice-president’s remarks that politicians from GPS are a different breed from the rest and that they are not party-hoppers or could be bought.

To this, Chiew said GPS politicians had integrity and would not be seen crossing the floor and hopping (to another party) which was against its culture and principles.

“Unless, hopping is done only on matters of principle,” she said.
