KUCHING: The Sarawak Electrolyser Assembly – Distribution Facility (SEA-DF) marks a significant step towards realising a sustainable, lower carbon future together.

Senior Vice President, Malaysia Petroleum Management, Petronas, Datuk Ir Bacho Pilong, said the facility not only an assembly and distribution centre of high-quality,

innovative hydrogen electrolysers and related systems but also represents a pivotal stride in ensuring timely delivery and operational efficiency of hydrogen projects across Sarawak.

“It is also poised to create the right ecosystem while localising the supply chain, to drive innovation and efficiency in the delivery of hydrogen solutions.

“Our homegrown technology – the PEM electrolyser – is at the heart of these projects, demonstrating the technology prowess of Petronas.”

He said this in his speech during the SEA-DF lauching ceremony at Demak Laut Indutrial Park here today (June 6).

He also said the innovation is designed to be robust and resilient to take on cost competitiveness and diverse market applications.

“From technology and technical expertise covering membrane electrode assembly, plate machining and electroplating, to value added services including inventories, warehousing as well as project delivery for small and large-scale projects – the facility has all these under one roof.

“Our synergy with SEDC Energy also encompasses shared access to technological resources and on-the-ground expertise, to support the operation and maintenance of hydrogen assets.

“At the same time, we are also fostering collaboration between local and international partners to promote knowledge transfer and skills development. In other words, the hydrogen assembly and distribution facility is set to be the cradle of future talents,” said Bacho.

He also said that Lestari H2GaaS is entering into more collaborations with SEDC Energy and other partners to grow its apired hydrogen ecosystem together.

“We hope these concerted efforts will further support the state government in driving job creation, future-proofing human capital, and accelerating economic growth, to benefit not only the population of this beautiful land but also the broader region.”

Meanwhile, also speaking, chairman of SEDC Sarawak, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr Abdul Aziz Datuk Husain, who said that the SEA-DF will further enhance SEDC Energy capacity to produce and distribute hydrogen, a key component in the global shift towards clean new energy sources.

“After all, as all of you may know, hydrogen is poised to play a critical role in the transition to a low-carbon economy, and Sarawak is well-positioned to be at the forefront of this movement.

“This facility not only contributes to our state’s energy security but also creates numerous high-quality jobs, stimulates local economies, and attracts further investments in clean technologies. Through initiatives like these, we are ensuring that Sarawak remains competitive and forward-thinking in the evolving global energy landscape.”

SEA-DF is first of its kind facility in Malaysia, jointly operated by SEDC Energy (SEDCE) and Lestari H2GaaS, a new subsidiary of Petronas. This pioneering facility represents the future of home-grown technology and marks Sarawak’s first electrolyser assembly facility.

SEA-DF will deliver advanced and efficient electrolysers, capable of utilising less than 40 kilowatt-hour (kWhr) to produce one kilogram of hydrogen, setting a new  benchmark for the industry.
