GEDONG: There is a need to elevate Gedong to a district because of various upcoming development projects in the area.
In stating this, Gedong assemblyman Datuk Naroden Majais said the journey from Kuching to Gedong would be shortened to only 40 minutes once the new and improved road connecting the coastal highway and the area was completed.
“Gedong will be more strategic when it becomes a central stopover area after the completion of this new road.
“This road will pass through the oil palm plantation at Tabung Haji-Pelita from Gedong to the Ulu Simunjan Hinterland area. It will be completed in the next two years,” he said.
Naroden was speaking at the 88th Army Day celebration at Gedong Community Hall today.
He revealed that two sites on the old and derelict DID Coconut Scheme land not far from Gedong would be developed as modern agro parks.
“This will allow Gedong to become one of the food basket areas or producers of agro-based food items for Sarawak.
“In addition, the Community Development Park, to be built in the middle of this year, will include a synthetic grass football field, a community development centre and a nine-storey hotel as well as many facilities,” he said.
The International Trade and Industry, Industrial Terminal and Entrepreneur Development Assistant Minister said the initiative could not be done without the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Commenting on the Jiwa Murni programme conducted by the Army, Naroden said it was the second time Gedong was chosen to implement the Jiwa Murni programme after the first time, seven years ago.
