MUKAH: The state Education Department is currently seeking an emergency allocation from the Education Ministry to assist Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Mukah, said its director Dr Azhar Ahmad.

In the incident on Monday, the top floor of the school’s three-storey dormitory block which housed male students was razed by fire. However, no fatalities were reported and the cause is still under investigation.

According to Azhar, the allocation was necessary to facilitate the process of cleaning, repairing and purchase of new furniture in the affected dormitory.

“The school has decided to allow male boarding students in the Special Education Integration Programme (PPKI) and Form One to Three, who are not involved in the excellence awards ceremony, to return home on the evening of the incident.

“The amount of loss remains unknown as it is still under quotation,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Meanwhile, the school principal urged students, whose parents or guardians are able to send them to school during the repair period, to attend classes as normal.

“Students who have trouble coming to school (because parents cannot send them), will be granted leave in the Student Database Application (APDM) by their form teacher.

“While for Form Five students and those assisting the teachers during the excellence awards ceremony, they will be staying temporarily at the school’s surau until Thursday under the hostel wardens’ watch,” he said.
