THE passing of the Constitution of State of Sarawak (Amendment) Bill, 2020 is a huge victory for Sarawakians, said Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian (SUPP-Batu Kawa).
He said it was an especially great day for Sarawakians as for the first time ever, the august House would now be for Sarawakians only.
“We define the resident of Sarawak as must be born in Sarawak, must live in Sarawak and all of the legal terms.
“The purpose of this Bill is to tighten (the law) so that the DUN (State Legislative Assembly) will forever be in the hands of Sarawakians and not to loosen (the law) as what was argued by certain quarters.
“This is important because we noticed that in Malaysia, Sarawak is the only state at the moment to have a law such as this,” he said today.
He pointed out that Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) had noticed a few anomalies in the original Bill when it was presented last Tuesday but instead of bulldozing the Bill, the anomalies were clarified in order to make it less ambiguous.
“So for GPS (as a whole) and SUPP (Sarawak United People’s Party) in particular – for 61 years, SUPP had always fought for the people of Sarawak and we are still here to fight for Sarawakians and our mission has not changed.”
Dr Sim said the opposition should not oppose the Bill for the sake of opposing, but should develop a common sense, logic, and love for Sarawak.
“It’s very sad that we don’t have the solidarity that we should for something that is so serious for Sarawak.
“When it is a good law, we should come and support Sarawak so that the future generations, including the opposition leaders’ children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, will be able to safeguard Sarawak,” said Dr Sim.
He added the opposition had the opportunity to continue something of great significance to Sarawak but chose to twist the situation and decided not to support the Bill.
