SIBU: The Sarawak government’s decision to adopt English as the medium of instruction for science subjects in secondary schools has been widely applauded.
Board Management at SMK Tiong Hin chairman Philip Lau King Kah praised the decision as a reflection of a forward-thinking strategy aimed at boosting students’ academic performance and global competitiveness.
“It’s fantastic to see the Sarawak government taking a proactive stance in shaping the education system for the better,” he said during SMK Tiong Hin’s annual prize-giving ceremony held today (Dec 8)
Lau emphasised the increasing importance of a skilled and diverse workforce, particularly in science and engineering fields.
“Therefore, it is imperative for us, as a school, to gear up and reinforce our students’ proficiency in both English and Chinese, in addition to Bahasa Malaysia,” he added.
Expressing gratitude to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Lau highlighted the strides made under his leadership in recognising language diversity, officially designating English as an official language alongside Bahasa Malaysia.
“I urge the students to recognise the value of linguistic diversity and to seize the opportunities presented by the Sarawak government’s initiatives,” Lau said.
Furthermore, Lau commended the state government’s focus on Chinese language education and recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), noting China’s global economic significance.
“We are indeed fortunate to have a far-sighted leader who understands the importance of language in our increasingly globalised world,” he said.
Lau encouraged the graduating students to become ambassadors of this visionary educational approach, leveraging their multilingual skills to navigate the global community.
Also present were SMK Tiong Hin’s principal Ooi Leong Hoon and school board management members.
