KOTA SAMARAHAN: i-CATS University and Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD) Semiconductor Sdn Bhd are discussing the integration of aerospace modules into their curriculum, as announced by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
This initiative signifies a significant stride towards enhancing educational offerings and equipping students for careers in the high-tech aerospace industry.
“I hope SMD can collaborate with private partners to engage in research and development of a Sarawak-owned chip that can be incorporated into satellites,” said Abang Johari.
Such collaboration would facilitate the growth of local manufacturers into high-end producers of aerospace components.
By elevating our local manufacturing to high-end aerospace component production, we can drive innovation, enhance technological expertise, and create a robust ecosystem that supports the growth of high-tech industries in Sarawak,” he added.
Abang Johari made these remarks during the launch of the SMD Chip Design Centre and SMD Academy, as well as the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between SMD Semiconductor and the Land and Survey Department, held at Hock Seng Lee Tower today (June 26).
Furthermore, Abang Johari emphasized that this strategic move would expedite the region’s journey towards becoming a hub of technological excellence.
“The benefits will be far-reaching, positively impacting our economy and educational landscape by attracting foreign investment, fostering international collaborations, and advancing local industries,” he stated.
On June 12, Abang Johari announced the Sarawak Government’s plan to establish an aerospace faculty at i-CATS University, citing Sarawak’s advantageous location just north of the equator as an ideal launching pad for the aerospace industry.
“Remember, satellite launches need to be near the equator because of the orbit, and we are at the equator, which is our advantage,” he highlighted.
