KUCHING: Starting a business is a big achievement for many entrepreneurs, but maintaining it is a larger challenge.

There are many challenges every business faces, whether they are large or small. These include things such as hiring the right people, building a brand, developing a customer base and so on.

Baker Nurul Hakimah Abdul Rahman Jebit, when met by our reporter, said that although she has been in business for seven years, she admitted that maintaining the business is not an easy task.

“As we are facing the Covid-19 pandemic at the moment, I believe, almost all types of businesses are affected by this challenging situation.

“However, as an entrepreneur, one should not be easily discouraged.

“Taking myself as an example, since the movement control order (MCO) was implemented in March last year, I admit it has been a bit stressful for me and my business,” she said, adding the lack of demand for her cakes due to the movement restrictions during the MCO period was among the greatest challenges she faced throughout her career as an entrepreneur.

The 52-year-old said to facilitate customers and increase the demand for her cakes, she started offering delivery service to customers.

Asked on what drives her to venture into business, Nurul Hakimah stated that the idea to start the business arose due to her boredom staying at home without doing any other activities other than the house chores (as at that time she was a full-time housewife).

Therefore, she said to fill her free time and to help her husband increase their family income as well as to generate side income for herself, she decided to sell various types of cakes.

“Customers can get my cake for as low as RM30. The price of the cake depends on the flavour, size and decoration of the cake requested by the customer.

“Apart from making birthday cakes, I also accept cake orders for weddings, anniversaries, engagements and others,” she added.
