The Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation Amendment Bill 2022 shows that Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg do prioritise environmental stability.
Dayang Noorazah Awang Sohor (GPS-Lingga) said that this Bill shows that the state government is very concerned about issues involving reserved forests and logging activities.
“As we already know, the whole world is now facing the climate change crisis causing the water level to be higher than usual and this can be witnessed through several items, including flash floods and overflows that affect some areas, especially in coastal areas,” she said.
She added that Sarawak Bumi Kenyalang is the largest region in Malaysia, which is famous for its hills, rivers, national parks, protected animals such as proboscis monkeys, hornbills, sun bears and even having the oldest rainforest in Malaysia.
“The privilege is one of the factors that make Sarawak the focus of tourists from all over the world.
“Without persistent efforts to preserve the beauty of this environment, our next generation will not be able to enjoy the beauty that Sarawak has now.
“For this reason, Premier has highlighted this matter in the 15th general election GPS manifesto which is to preserve and protect the environment for the present and future generations.
“Therefore, today’s Bill will fulfil the promise of the GE-15 GPS manifesto and with that I hereby fully support this Bill,” she concluded.
