KUCHING: There should be equal enthusiasm or eagerness in the celebration of Sarawak Day (22 July), Merdeka Day (31 August), and Malaysia Day (16 September). This was said by Padungan state assemblyman
Wong King Wei during the launching ceremony of the state-level ‘Kempen Kibar Jalur Gemilang’ at SK Lumba Kuda here on Tuesday.
“The previous government had announced 16 September as a public holiday in 2010 but the concentration on Malaysia Day celebrations had always been in Sabah and Sarawak.
“Why is there a lack of effort in raising awareness to celebrate Malaysia Day in West Malaysia?” he said while delivering his speech. He also added that there is a need to correctly educate the next generation on the history of Malaysia thoroughly. “Malaysia Day should be celebrated by all of us, including Sarawak Day as well as Merdeka Day as we are partners of Malaysia.
“There is no harm to celebrate as it is moment like this for us as Malaysians to celebrate together,” he said. Meanwhile, Wong also spoke on how the sentiment of ‘Sarawak For Sarawakians’ (S4S) was misused as means to segregate East and West Malaysians.“Why is there a need to plant hatred among East and West Malaysians? “With the new government, unity is what we are promoting and we unite Malaysians by providing good policies and transparent governance,” he said.
