MIRI: Equal employment opportunities should be given to male and female students wishing to venture into areas requiring technical skills, said Miri Industrial Training Institute (ILP) Director Dr Rosnah Muhamad Tahir.
According to her, most companies preferred to employ male students compared to female students after their graduation.
“I hope the state government can look into this matter and do something about it in order to ensure that women students are marketable in technical fields as they are qualifying as their male counterparts,” she stressed during her courtesy visit to Miri Member of Parliament Dr Michael Teo in Jalan Sri Dagang here yesterday.
At the visit, she also pointed out the importance of mastering the English language among ILP students – as the institution aiming not only to produce skill manpower but also good human capital value.
However, she said during their students’ enrolment recently, they only managed to approve 10 percent out of 1,200 applications due to lack of staff. “Currently, we only have 45 lecturers covering nearly 600 students. We still need 20 more staff,” said Dr Rosnah.
Miri ILP is among three institutes in Sarawak providing technical and vocational education training (TVET) to students.
