Escapee gets four months imprisonment

SIBU: A convict who escaped from prison was on Monday (Nov 8) sentenced to four months’ imprisonment and slapped with a fine of RM2,000, in default of two months’ jail by the Magistates’ Court here.

Lee Ka Yieng, 49, from Jalan Kuari, Batu 20 was indicted under Section 224 of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of up to two years or fine or both upon conviction.

He was charged with escaping from the custody in which he was lawfully detained at the cell numbered 5, prison transit centre, Sibu Central Prison at about 12.30pm on May 30.

Prosecuting officer Insp Badrul Iskandar Selamat who presented facts of the case told the court that on May 30 at about 12.35pm, a prisoner identifed as the accused had fled by sabotaging the cell’s door lock and climbed out through the fence beside cell numbered 5.

The accused was believed to have run off to the town area. A report was subsequently lodged regarding the matter to seek police’s assistance to hunt for the accused.

The accused was a close contact to other prisoner who was found to be Covid-19 positive.

On Nov 1 at about 1.10pm, a police team from Sibu with their Sarikei counterparts arrested the accused at the compound of the Sarikei police station.

Investgation revealed that the accused was found to have escaped from the lawful detention from the prison at the material time and the breakout incident had been recorded by the prison’s CCTV.

The accused who was unrepresented failed to pay the fine.
