SIBU: The Stage programme, a platform for performers here to showcase their talents, has successfully breathed life into the usually quiet and under-utilised 34-year-old Rejang Park Esplanade.
The opening ceremony was yesterday night and it was nice once again to see the park filled with bright lights, food stalls, and a sea of people coming for the entertainment and various side activities.
“As you can see, the performers are multi-racial and multi-religious. My part is mainly in organising the programme and make sure that the two-day event runs smoothly,” said Bukit Assek assemblyman, Joseph Chieng Jin Ek after the opening ceremony.
He was glad that the response from the crowd and the performers were as good as per his expectation.
“As you know this esplanade has been quiet for many years … 10, maybe 20 years … It has been very under-utilised.
“So, with the assistance and support from the Sibu Municipal Council, we have upgraded this area to host The Stage programme tonight.
“Apart from that, a total of 22 stalls were also opened during the programme; they allowed youth entrepreneurs to do business.
“We also invite youth entrepreneurs to sell their goods at the stalls. As you could see, they offered different varieties of products.”
Chieng hoped that the programme which aimed to promote local performers from Sibu had achieved its goal.
“I hope that with the help from YouTubers, this programme can be seen nationally and internationally.
“People will know our performers and eventually promote them. I also invite two west Malaysian artistes to come here so that they can learn from them.”
Chieng stressed that it was important for youth to show their talents.
“So, don’t worry about it. I prepare the stage for you, you come and show your talent – it is as simple as that,” he said.
Chieng also hoped more events would be organised at the esplanade.
“Today, we utilise half of the park and hopefully next time we can utilise the whole area of Rejang Esplanade.
“This means more stalls, performances and more activities,” he said.
