KUCHING: Sarawak is preparing to establish the Sarawak Artificial Intelligence Centre (SAIC) in the state, announced Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

The State Cabinet recently approved the establishment of the centre, which will focus on AI research, development, and commercialisation.

Uggah emphasised that the centre will play a crucial role in accelerating the development of local AI talent and attracting global AI experts, thereby enhancing Sarawak’s competitiveness in attracting investments.

He made these remarks during the Gawai Kaamatan Business Forum 2024, held in conjunction with the Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) and Kadazandusun Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) Gawai-Kaamatan Celebration at the DCCI Tower, Jalan Ong Tiang Swee today (July 2).

Uggah, who also holds the Second Minister of Finance and New Economy portfolio, said the centre is aligned with the United Nations’ resolution on AI. He emphasised the importance of ensuring that developing countries have the necessary technology and capabilities to leverage the benefits of AI, such as disease detection, flood prediction, agricultural support, and workforce training.

Furthermore, Uggah encouraged people to harness the potential of AI to drive innovation, improve efficiency, and create new opportunities for economic growth.

He welcomed collaborations between the public sector, academia, and industry players to accelerate AI adoption and maximise its economic impact, ensuring sustainable and inclusive development for the future of Sarawak.

Uggah urged members of the DCCI to explore and capitalise on opportunities in the state’s port business.

He revealed that the state government has decided to establish the Sarawak Ports Authority as the single body responsible for regulating all five ports in Sarawak.

He also mentioned that the state government is preparing its ports to meet local needs and to cater to the Borneo region, particularly neighbouring areas.

Additionally, he announced that the Bintulu Port Authority will be taken over by Sarawak, presenting numerous opportunities in port-related businesses, including shipping, port management, monitoring, and inland facilities.

Uggah emphasised the importance of DCCI members not missing out on these business opportunities and encouraged them to learn from their counterparts in the KCCI. He hoped that DCCI would explore the port business, as it presents a new avenue for growth in Sarawak.
