Ex-clerk faces 12 CBT charges

SIBU: A middle-aged woman was indicted in the Sessions Court here on 12 counts of criminal breach of trust (CBT) at a legal firm today (31 Oct).

When Deputy Public Prosecutor Rex Heng Yi Min read and explained the charges to Chew Lang Hua, 56, she pleaded innocence to all the charges.

Sessions Court Judge Marutin Pagan allowed the accused to be released on RM3,000 in one surety for each charge and fixed the pre-trial case management for Nov 30.

On the first charge, Chew as a clerk at a law firm in Jalan Dr Wong Soon Kai, who was entrusted with the company’s cheque, committed CBT amounting to RM147.20, by issuing a cheque as payment of submission fee of the Able Business Services (ABS) through Ambank Account in which, ABS had never been appointed to perform the submission work on behalf of the law firm.

She committed the offence on Oct 10, 2011,

The other 11 similar nature of charges against her were committed on different occasions between Dec 12, 2011 and June 26, 2019 amounting to between RM170 and RM1,830.

The offence is framed under Section 408 of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of not less than one year and not more than 14 years and with whipping and she can be fined as well.

Chew was represented by defence counsel Jessie Wong.
