KUCHING: Three hundred and forty-two summonses were issued for illegal exhaust modifications in the past 17 days of ‘Ops Ubah Suai Ekzos’.

Roadblocks were set up throughout the state, and Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu said as of March 17, summonses were issued to owners of 212 motorcycles, 122 cars and eight; other types of vehicles.

He said 220 operations were held throughout the state and 8,786 vehicles were inspected – 3,089 motorcycles, 3,091 cars and 2,606; other types of vehicles.

“Of the total, police issued 342 summonses for noisy exhaust during the 17 days of the special operation that began on March 1,” he said on Thursday (March 18).

He added that 1,739 summonses were also issued for other offences.

They included 210 for vehicle number plates not up to standard, 193 for having fancy number plates and 276 for modifying vehicle structure.

“Police also confiscated 58 motorcycles and a car for further investigation under Section 64 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.”

Meanwhile, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Department of Environment (DoE), also issued compounds throughout the operation.

“JPJ issued 37 compounds while the DoE issued five.”
