THE relocation of 47 household heads and their extended families to the Pagan Village Expansion Scheme (SPK) due to severe erosion impacts along Kampung Melango needs to be expedited.
Mohamad Duri (GPS-Kalaka) said that the erosion of the riverbank near Kampung Melango, Saratok required serious attention as there are many riverbank structures that are increasingly eroded.
“The land erosion incident in Kampung Melango, which affects five villages, starting from Kampung Pagan to the tributary of Sungai Melango, has been occurring since 2015.
“Several measures have been taken by the government to curb this land erosion issue; however, it still does not seem that this erosion can be effectively controlled,” he said in his debate in support of the Supply Bill 2025 here, today (Nov 14).
He also said that an incident has occurred where three houses have already been lost to land erosion into the depths of the Sungai Batang Krian.
“The number of residents severely impacted by land erosion in Kampung Melango, specifically in Kampung Melango Baru Hilir, is 12 houses and 35 households.
“In Kampung Melango Lama Hulu, there are 11 houses with a total of 55 people, Kampung Melango Lama Tengah has 15 houses with 48 people, Kampung Pagan has three houses with 10 people, and Kampung Pagan has six houses with a total of 20 people.”
Therefore, he proposed for the government to relocates the affected residents to SPK Pagan as quickly as possible.
“Given that Kampung Melango is severely affected by erosion, I also suggest that all household heads and extended families living by the Sungai Batang Krian in these five villages be relocated to SPK Pagan through an urban renewal approach.
“After the relocation, the relevant agencies need to initiate an erosion control project along the Sungai Krian affected banks. Appropriate actions must be taken to resolve and prevent further erosion before the situation worsens.”
He also requested for relevant agencies to investigate the erosion site along the Kampung Hilir Kupang riverbank in his constituency.
“The primary cause of the erosion issue may stem from various factors that need to be studied and examined by the authorities.
“This is especially important as the road used by residents is dangerously close to the erosion area, and there is concern that it may spread further if no action is taken. This, in turn, impacts public safety, especially for the residents of the village.”
