The irresistible sweetness and rich texture of ‘Kuih Bongkol’ have made it a beloved dessert among many, especially during Ramadan.
This traditional delicacy is cherished for its perfect blend of sweetness and richness, making it a delightful treat to share with loved ones.
Nur Emi Ezzana Abdul Hamid, a 30-year-old entrepreneur specialising in ‘Kuih Bongkol,’ notes the high demand for this dessert, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan.
Although ‘Kuih Bongkol’ is available year-round, most entrepreneurs prefer to focus on producing it during Ramadan due to the heightened demand, she explained.
Having inherited the recipe and skills from her 75-year-old mother, Elot Ajis, Emi has been running the business for nearly five years.
“My mother, who has been making this dessert for over 20 years, passed down her small business to me in 2020,” Emi shares with the New Sarawak Tribune.
Despite having worked as a branch manager in the Peninsular, Emi decided to dedicate herself full-time to continue her mother’s business legacy.
Running this business not only allows her to preserve her mother’s tradition but also provide a decent income, especially during Ramadan, she noted.
During Ramadan, Emi can produce over 400 pieces of ‘Kuih Bongkol’ daily, selling them at RM1.50 per piece at the Ramadan Bazaar. This translates to a potential monthly income of RM5,000.
Emi pointed out the complexity of the manufacturing process, requiring specific skills, especially in wrapping the dessert.
“While the process demands time, energy, and skill, the end result is worth it. Some customers even prefer the dessert chilled.”
Initially promoted within their neighbourhood and family circle, Emi’s ‘Kuih Bongkol’ gained popularity through word of mouth and social media, attracting more customers.
Encouraging others to try the recipe, Emi invites them to experience the joy of breaking fast with this beloved delicacy.
