SIBU: Opposition Sarawak Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) unique position as part of the federal government has put it in a better position to serve.

“We are in a better position to serve the people,” said State DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen, noting that as the party is in the federal government right now, they have access to federal ministries.

“Therefore, it is important that all our grassroots leaders and those working in the service centres have contact with the officers of our Ministers and Deputy Ministers, not to ‘cari kantao’ (seek favour or gain), but to help resolve the people’s problems,” he said.

Chong who is Stampin MP and Padungan assemblyman gave the reminder at the 20th Sarawak DAP Annual Conference here Sunday (March 12).

He also advised those who were appointed to federal government agencies to make full use of their position and privilege for the benefit of Sarawak.

In this context Chong explained the unique position of the party saying many are confused as to where DAP Sarawak stands, given that the ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition in the state is also part of the federal government.

“To me, our role and position are clear. We are the government together with GPS at the federal level but opposition in the state where GPS is the governing coalition.

“It is not the first time in Sarawak’s history that such a phenomenon has occurred. Back in the 80s and 90s, PBDS was part of the federal government together with the then Sarawak Barisan Nasional, but at the same time, PBDS was the opposition party in Sarawak,” he said.

He stressed that as part of the federal government, the party will help to formulate and carry out the federal government’s policies, in particular, in Sarawak.

“As an opposition in Sarawak, we provide the necessary check and balances to the policies of the Sarawak government.

“A vibrant political opposition remains a core pillar of true democracy, allowing expression to all voices and opinions within the society,” he said.

Chong noted that during the last convention in January 2022, he had suggested three items for the party to work on to regain people’s support.

“Namely, continue to serve, more youth participation, and stepping up our publicity. I am glad to see that efforts were made along these three strategies.

“We saw an influx of youth members in their early twenties last year. DAP Sarawak must continue to be the choice and the voice of the youth,” he said.
