Exploring opportunities for Sarawakian students at Switzerland’s University of Bern

KUCHING: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian will ensure that the relevant party in Sarawak explore and pursue potential opportunities for Sarawakian children to study at the University of Bern in Switzerland.

According to him, children in Sarawak need to take necessary steps to pursue opportunities available, either in Sarawak itself or at the University of Bern.

“The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Bern, founded in 1834, is one of the world-renowned institutions, ranking 94th and among the top five in Switzerland.

“Offering various fields of study with 20,000 students and 8,000 staff, this university operates with a budget of Swiss franc (SF) 1 billion CHF, with 34 per cent of the funds contributed by the Canton government, 15 per cent by the Federal government, and the remaining from competitive sources from the private sector.

“Therefore, I urge relevant parties in Sarawak to follow through potential opportunities for Sarawakian children either in Sarawak or at the University of Bern.”

Dr Sim said this in his official Facebook page yesterday following his visit to the university.

Elaborating further, he said the university’s Faculty of Medicine offered various facilities, including 56 Departments/Institutes.

“This is a number of very interesting new set-up that Sarawak can explore and collaborate with. Besides that there are 124 professors and 11 professors in the faculty are engineers.

“There are 2,411 medical students, making it the largest Faculty of Medicine in Switzerland, with a budget of 211 million CHF from the university itself and 99 million CHF from third parties.”

He added that the University Hospital of Bern offered extensive medical facilities with 1,354 beds, making it the largest university hospital in Switzerland.

“With employees of 11,300, this institution provides great opportunities for students to gain extensive clinical experience.”
