KUCHING: Police have arrested six members of an extortion gang here.
The suspects, aged between 23 and 52 years, were arrested by a team from Criminal Investigation Department, Kuching IPD between 3pm and 9pm on Tuesday (23 june).
The arrests were made after the Kuching district police headquarters received a report from a victim who alleged that the gang members had demanded money from him.
They claimed that they were guarding the area and threatened to disrupt the construction work if they were not paid. The incident happened around 1pm on June 19.
A police statement said, “Early investigations found the six suspects were also involved in similar modus operandi at other construction sites. They demanded between RM100 and RM500 in cash.
“Further investigation revealed the suspects also had previous criminal records involving crime and narcotics. Besides that, four of the suspects tested positive for methamphetamine.”
The police thanked the public for providing information on the gang.
