LEDs. Aliens. Applause. JIMMY LIM’s show at the recent Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week wowed audiences with futuristic styles that propelled them over the moon.

Minimalism, with futuristic vibes

It was like taking a trip to space during a show at Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week (KLFW) 2023 recently.

At the opening of the JIMMY LIM show, LED technology was used to create visually stunning experiences that engaged the audience.

An alien at the beginning of the show.

The well-choreographed opening, with excellent visuals and appropriate music that alluded to extra-terrestrial life, saw a model dressed as an alien walking out of the darkness onto a lighted stage.

That intro received a tumultuous applause from the audience.

Much like a ‘Space Age’ collection, there were lashings of white, silver, and a hint of pink on the fashion pieces worn by 12 models and two portraying outer-space aliens.

One was apparently a guest who was donned by JIMMY LIM and ended up as a model on the catwalk with his face hidden behind white lace.

He received thunderous applause even as he tumbled on the runway in his heels. The audience loved the vibe.

The catwalk or runway in the Sofitel ballroom, Damansara, Selangor was an elongated and elevated walkway in between seated guests to ensure that everyone could see the fashion show clearly.

The aesthetic of JIMMY LIM’s fashion for KLFW 2023 is minimalism, with some futuristic silhouettes alluring people with feelings of being a ‘Moon Girl’ or anything galactic.

Jimmy Lim, also known as Jimm, is an award-winning fashion designer who is well-known in Malaysia and New Zealand. He was awarded the Deutz Fashion Design Ambassador of the Year at Air New Zealand Fashion Week in 2004, and he represented the country as the Ambassador at London Fashion Week in 2006.

In 2017, Jimm was invited to participate at Busan Fashion Week.

JIMMY LIM received the ‘Decade of Excellence’ award at the Kuala Lumpur Fashion Awards 2021. This is also his 10th year of participating in KLFW.

Jimm is the founder of his own self-titled label JIMMY LIM, which he established in Auckland, New Zealand in 1999.

Following that, he started showcasing in Kuala Lumpur and has continued to do so to this day, pushing the frontiers of fashion with his latest collection, which features an energetic showcase of fresh new cuts, silhouettes, and prints, reflecting attention to detail and meticulous craftsmanship.

His designs often take inspiration from his personal experiences, including nature, music, culture, and tradition.

The philosophy behind Jimm’s creations is to ‘play’ without restrictions, allowing wearers to mix and match their clothing to create a completely personal style.

When asked about his most recent collection at KLFW 2023, he said,

“This year’s collection is dubbed ‘LISM’ Spring/Summer 2024, and it was created in the aftermath of the passing of my father from COVID late last year. I wanted to do it as a tribute to him, but I didn’t as I don’t want to incorporate sadness into my work of art. I then decided to put a positive spin on it by using the tagline ‘The future is looking bright’. The collection has a futuristic and minimalist vibe to it, hence the name ‘LISM’, with a blend of raw and natural materials that are kind on the skin.”

“It is a significant step forward for the Malaysian fashion industry. Having 7 days in 7 different locations gives off a similar vibe to the European runways, which are held in different locations during the fashion weeks I’ve attended,” he said on his involvement at this year’s KLFW.

“During KLFW, there are also full-fledged production teams present! Personally, I believe it has raised the level of appreciation for this industry to unprecedented heights!” he added.
