KUCHING: The state government and Peru are looking to strengthen collaboration in international trade through mutual export and import initiatives.
The topic was the key focus of discussion between Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, and the Peru Ambassador to Malaysia, Brunei, and Cambodia, Ricardo Estanislao Morote Canales, during his visit to Wisma Sumber Alam, Petra Jaya, here on Thursday.
Apart to enhance bilateral trade, the meeting also sought to identify potential opportunities for collaboration between Sarawak and Peru in areas such as investment and biodiversity.
When met by reporters, Ricardo mentioned that Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) is set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Cayetano Heredia University based in Lima, Peru, to foster cooperation in three areas, namely biodiversity, renewable energy, and tropical diseases.
“These are areas where Sarawak and Peru can collaborate, benefitting both parties through this partnership.
“Soon, we may also engage in exporting products such as grains and fruits from Peru to Sarawak.
“We also hope to import certain products from Sarawak, such as timber, which is crucial for both parties in the trade sector,” he said.
He also took the opportunity to discuss the Latin American Film Festival, which is set to take place in Kuching City on December 1.
