KUCHING: Minister of Works, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof yesterday said that the High Court ruling on Dr Ting Tiong Choon’s case showed that the judicial system in our country was very transparent and efficient.
“Although the state has decided on the matter, it still gives people an opportunity to bring the matter to the judiciary.
“We respect any decision of the court in accordance with the legislative process, the constitution and administration of our country,” he stressed.
The High Court here yesterday ruled as unlawful the State Legislative Assembly (DUN)’s decision to disqualify Dr Ting as Pujut assemblyman.
Justice Datuk Douglas Cristo Primus Sikayun also ordered that Dr Ting to be restored as the constituency’s representative.
By virtue of this outcome, there will be no by-election in Pujut even though the Election Commission (EC) had fixed 20 June for nomination and 4 July for polling.
On 12 May, Dr Ting was disqualified from being a DUN member as he was alleged to have previously acquired dual citizenship (Malaysia and Australia) after a motion by Sarawak Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh passed with a 70-10 vote.
On 7 June, he filed an originating summons to challenge the DUN’s decision in disqualifying him as a member of the August House.
Meanwhile, Fadillah was interviewed after he distributed 500 packets of “Bubur Lambuk” (savoury porridge) to the public along Jalan Merdeka in Petra Jaya here during the “Jarayawara Bubur Lambuk Saberkas 2017” programme.
He was accompanied by Tupong State Assemblyman, Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman at the event.
The programme was organised by Tupong Jaya Saberkas in collaboration with Surau Darul Hijrah Committee, PBB Tupong Wing Committee and RELA PJ-06.
