KUCHING: Two men have been arrested for attempted armed robbery at a 24-hour convenience store at Taman Sukma on Wednesday (Nov 4). One of them was apprehended by a worker, here.
Kuching district police chief, ACP Awang Din Awang Gani, said at 2am there was a scuffle between a suspect and a store employee. The worker overpowered the suspect and handed him over to the police.
After that, the police went on to arrest the accomplice and seized a motorcycle used by the suspects.
“It turned out that about 1.30am on the same day, the suspects also attempted a robbery at a petrol station at Jalan Abdul Rahman but were unsuccessful.
“One of the suspects pointed a weapon (which resembled a black gun) causing the employees to flee into the station’s store. The suspects immediately fled after that.
“Right after that, they tried their luck just after 2am at the afore-mentioned 24-hour shop which resulted in their arrest,” said Awang Gani.
Further investigation will be done after which the suspects will be brought to court to get them remanded under section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
“So far, the police have been able to resolve three reported cases and interrogation will continue to identify the involvement of the two suspects in other cases.
“Background checks also found that one of the suspects have previous criminal records for property theft, robberies and drug-related crimes,” he said.
Awang Gani also lauded the shop workers for standing up to the robbers, thereby helping the police to get the suspects arrested.
The case is being investigated under Section 395 of the Penal Code which provides for imprisonment up to 20 years and whipping for offenders.
