MARUDI: A search and rescue (SAR) party yesterday managed to find the remains of 51-year-old Janin anak Seligi who fell into the Baram River near Lubok Nibong on Thursday.
Marudi District Police chief DSP Gabriel who confirmed the matter said the SAR party found the remains at 12.55pm yesterday. The body was found floating about three kilometres from the location where the deceased fell from his boat.
Sources said the victim, an Iban from Rumah Jipun, Sungai Gaong Marudi was going in his boat alone to check on his ‘pukat’ (net trap) and other baits on fish hooks that he planted along the river about 6am on Thursday.
It was said that the victim was back home by 6,30am to tell his family members that his leg was injured by a sharp fish fin and that he was on his way to Marudi town to sell his catch. Nevertheless, his journey to Marudi ended in a tragedy where the victim was believed to have fallen from his boat to the Baram River near to Lubok Nibong.
Coincidentally, another villager by the name of Johnny who was used another boat using the same way to Marudi passed by the victim’s boat with the engine still on by the riverbank but without any driver. Johnny immediately returned to the longhouse to inform the family of the victim that he suspected Janin had fallen from his boat.
That led for the SAR team to be formed comprising the police, the Bomba (fire and rescue services department) and divers from Zone 6 Miri as well as 25 others consisting of family members and local residents.
After finding the body it was sent to the Marudi morgue for further action.
