KUCHING: Families are allowed to visit inmates at prison institutions in Sabah on June 4 and 5 and in Sarawak on June 5 and 6 in conjunction with the Harvest Festival and Gawai Dayak Festivals respectively.
The Malaysian Prison Department said inmates can meet their families through two options — either face-to-face or via online.
“For the face-to-face meeting with inmates, detainees or residents, families must adhere to several conditions.
“The visiting hours are from 8.15 am to 4.15 pm, and visitors are requested to bring their visit card and identification card for ease of process,” it said in a statement.
It added that visitors are not allowed to bring any food or drinks to the residents as food and drinks can be purchased from the prison canteen, and priority is given to visits by residents from the celebrating communities.
“Visitors are also not encouraged to give money to the residents since all basic facilities are provided by the Prison Department.
“If visitors wish to give money to the residents for specific purposes such as examination fees, please obtain the official PPT. 28 receipt as proof of receipt,” it said, adding that visitors are subject to the Prison Act and Regulations, which allow the prison authorities to conduct physical inspections when visitors enter and exit the prison.
“As for the online meetings, it will held for a period of three days from June 7 to 9. This is to provide an opportunity for families who cannot visit the prison for face-to-face meetings,” it said.
Visitors may also contact the respective prison institution for further information.
