SARIKEI: A family of three was made homeless after fire gutted their house at Jalan Sungai Petai, Scheme B here on Tuesday night.

State Fire and Rescue Department operation centre said the family members identified as Lee Fouk Chuan, aged 66, Lau Eing Yong and Jacay Lau, managed to escape the blaze unharmed.

Sarikei Fire and Rescue station deployed a team of nine firefighters to the scene about eight kilometres from the station, upon receiving an emergency call at 8.49 pm.

The fire had almost destroyed the entire semi-concrete house when the firemen arrived. The absence of a fire hydrant near the scene caused the firefighters to pump water from a nearby stream to put out the blaze.

The fire was brought under control at 11.25pm. However, the house was almost completely burned down.

The cause of the fire and loss to property are still under investigation.
