KOTA SAMARAHAN: Rendah Regon, 62, and his relatives from Kampung Merdang harvested rice at his farm in Samarahan yesterday.

Rendah said the rice should have been harvested in March, but they could not go anywhere as the movement control order (MCO) was in force.

Only after hearing last Saturday that they were allowed to carry out the harvest as announced by Deputy Chief Minister and chairman of the State Disaster Management Committee (JPBNS), Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, did he and his relatives started harvesting as early as 7.30am.

Yesterday was their first day and they worked until 3pm. They will continue as long as the weather permits.

The rice was overripe, but they had to try to save whatever they could because so much energy and money had been spent on the farm.

Rendah said they would see how much of the rice could be saved although he already noticed that quite a lot had gone to waste. He was still thankful, though, for it was not a complete loss.
