SIBU: A father and son, who went to the police station to report that their vehicle was shot at, ended up in handcuffs instead.

Police were forced to open fire on a four-wheel drive (4WD) belonging to one of the men, suspected of being involved in drug peddling activities, at Jalan Mission here on Dec 20.

Prior to the incident, the suspects refused to have their vehicle inspected.

Sibu OCPD ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said the incident occurred when a narcotics police team led by an officer ordered the suspects to stop their vehicle at 8.40pm.

The vehicle was being driven suspiciously by one of the suspects, aged 22.

“The officer ordered the suspect to open the door for inspection after identifying himself as a police officer (showing his warrant card).

“The suspect refused to cooperate, instead acted in an aggressive manner by reversing his vehicle dangerously towards the other police team members,” said Stanley yesterday.

Two policemen then opened fire, hitting the front and back tyres on the right side of the vehicle in an attempt to immobilise it.

However, the suspect throttled the vehicle and tried to mow down the policemen.

“They gave chase but failed. The officer then alerted the operations room and requested for back-up from mobile police units,” said Stanley.

He added that 35 minutes after the incident, the officer was contacted by headquarters that two men had come in to make a report of a shooting.

“The officer rushed over and immediately arrested the two men.”

The suspects will be remanded for four days to facilitate investigation.

ACP Stanley said the suspect confessed to having dumped drugs on the roadside — Jalan Oya traffic light intersection — in their escape.

“Police found drugs identified as syabu wrapped in paper on the grass weighing about 6.06 grammes.”

The vehicle—a Toyota Hilux pick-up—was found behind Poliklinik Jalan Oya.
