KUCHING: Minister of Welfare, Community Well Being, Women, Family and Childhood Development, Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah yesterday presented grants to the Sarawak Federal Women Institution (RM150,000), Sarawak Family Planning Association (RM20,000) and Serakup Indu Dayak Sarawak (RM10,000).
She said the Women and Family Council in Sarawak had drawn up seven strategies to empower women in the state in conjunction with the Empowering Women Year 2018.
The seven strategies are strengthening the women’s economic status, stabilisation of the family institution, leadership and decision making, safety and law, health and lifestyles, culture and digital economy.
Fatimah said strengthening the women’s economic status was important but most of the women faced problems with start-up capital.
“Our women have the skills to produce their products but they have problems with the start-up capital.
“My ministry will work with the relevant government agencies to look into this matter and I believe that this is needed by our women in the state to increase their incomes and thus strengthen the family foundation,” the Minister told a press conference yesterday after the first meeting of the Women and Family Council held at a local hotel here.
