KUCHING: The Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Ministry is determined to see women in Sarawak financially independent.
Its minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said the Wisma Wanita Training Centre (WWTC) here with its capacity building and training facilities was one of the best platforms to build women’s capacity.
Among the facilities and trainings available are sewing, beauty and spa and massage classes.
Fatimah was at WWTC today with delegates from the Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW), Brunei, Pulau Pinang; Regional Islamic Da’awah Council of Southeast Asia and the Pacific (RISEAP), and Persatuan Wanita Sabah (PEWASA). The delegates had earlier paid a courtesy call on her.
“This (WWTC) is one of the best places to bring the delegates because we want to show them that we have training facilities for women capacity building and empowerment where women can acquire the right skills based on their interests.
“With these skills, they can generate income and are able to bring extra income to their family, hence improving their socioeconomic status,” she said.
Fatimah said it was her ministry’s objective to emphasise the importance of financial independence for women.
“We are very determined to see our women financially independent so they will not have to depend on their husbands.
“As such, we want to reach out to more women and train them with income generating skills. In fact, we want to bring them to another level by equipping them with the ability to participate in the digital economy.”
WWTC also has a resource centre where members of the public can obtain information about the contributions of Sarawakian women in various fields.
“We want to enlighten the delegates on what the ministry is doing and there are many others, especially under our early childhood development as well as Social Development Council (MPS), where we deal with the homeless and stateless children, among others,” she said.
