KUCHING: Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen was described as being inconsistent by Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman.
He said this after Chong defended his decision to not support the motion of appreciation for former Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.
“I still remember Chong gave a moving tribute to Almarhum Tun Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud in February when he said Taib laid a strong foundation for the present state government to move Sarawak towards a brighter future.
“However, when a motion was tabled in the same tune of his own statement, not only he refused to support it but he was being disrespectful.
“I wonder if he was instructed not to support?” Fazzrudin said in a statement today.
The chief political secretary to the Premier reminded Chong that as an assemblyman voted into the Sarawak Assembly, one must speak the truth and not create perceptions that might mislead other members of the august House.
“The promise to give Sarawak 20 percent royalty on Oil and Gas as well as the return of 50 percent of taxes collected in Sarawak when they formed the federal government in 2018 also speaks to mind.
“On the matter of dilapidated schools many years ago, when his party boss will only implement the repairs subject to all existing loan being repaid first, he was quick to blame the Premier for not allocating the funding.
“This is despite the fact that education is responsibility of the federal government,” he said.
Fazzrudin said the Sarawak government never delayed in its repayment of the loan from the federal government and even advanced funds to the federal government to repair the dilapidated schools.
“Now when GPS government is providing the initial funding for the implementation of Education and Health projects in Sarawak to be reimbursed later by Putrajaya, he has remained silent and did not give due credit,” the Tupong assemblyman said
He also pointed out that the DAP during the campaign in the previous General Election stressed that it would not accept and work with UMNO, highlighting that voting for GPS means voting for UMNO.
“However, after the General Election, DAP abandoned their stand as they now accept UMNO. Surely, they have the responsibility to explain to their constituents.
“This is a major shift and I wonder whether Chong has engaged (his constituents) and explained the new alignment since they treated UMNO as a key political enemy in the past. He should not be taking his constituents for granted,” he said.
The Tupong assemblyman said Chong had a flawed view of democracy, not understanding the responsibility that comes with it.
“As he has said, with great power comes great responsibilities. In this case, he is refusing to be responsible for his words and when reminded, he is crying wolf and talking nonsense”.
