KUCHING: Sarawak failed to win the gold medal in the mixed team squash event, losing 3-2 to the Federal Territories in the final at the Sarawak Squash Centre here today (Aug 23).
In the men’s singles, Jia Rong Hii was tamed by Ameeshenraj Chandran 11-2, 11-3, and 11-4, giving the first point to Negeri Sembilan.
However, in the mixed doubles category, Altamis Aqhar Sallam A Sufian and Eugenia David managed to overcome Yu Jie Chen and Nse Isaac George Varughese Vivek with an overall score of 3-1.
In the first set, the Sarawak pair lost 11-9 but made a comeback in the second set, winning 7-11, dragging the game into the deciding set, eventually winning 11-10.
In the men’s doubles category, Harith Daniel and Desmond Yan Sheng Ong defeated Qayyym Adam Khairul Hilmi and Shamiel Haeyzad Shahrulhisam 10-11, 11-10, and 11-4.
However, Sarawak failed to overcome Negeri Sembilan when women’s singles player Xin Yii Lee was defeated by Yasshmita Jadishkumar 11-4, 11-4, and 11-3.
Additionally, the women’s doubles pair, Whitney Isabelle Wilson and Nathalie Shu Eng Sim, also failed to contribute a point for Sarawak, losing 11-6 and 11-8 to Harleein Tan and Haneesa Veerakumar.
Meanwhile, the son of the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tunku Zain Al Abidin Tuanku Muhriz, attended the match, with Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian present during the medal presentation to the players.
