KUALA LUMPUR: The International Sepak Takraw Federation (Istaf) plan to introduce sepak takraw as an electronic sport (e-sports).
Istaf secretary-general Datuk Abdul Halim Kader said the world governing body came up with the idea to introduce the traditional sport onto the digital platform following the Covid-19 pandemic.
Abdul Halim, who is also the Asian Sepak Takraw Federation (Astaf) president, said Istaf would hold discussions with the International Esports Federation (IESF) in South Korea and Singapore’s Global Esports Federation (GEF) regarding the matter.
“We will also get input from our 50 members on the implementation of sepak takraw in esports.
“Once we have finalised the details with IESF and GEF, we will announce the mechanism and also the format of sepak takraw in esports competition. But it will surely include the men’s doubles and inter-regu events, which are widely played in most major competitions,” he told Bernama recently.
Other sports have been included on the e-sports platform, such as football, cricket and motorsports, including MotoGP and Formula One. – Bernama
