MIRI: A global pitching competition was recently held by the Faculty of Business, Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia).
Students from various faculties and fields of study presented their ideas for potential solutions to global problems.
Through mentorship and support from local academics and businesspeople, the competition aimed to help students improve their problem-solving, creative thinking, public speaking, and presentation skills as well as their confidence.
Additionally, it gave the students a great chance to network and pick up crucial experience in product development.
A panel of experts from various backgrounds, including academics, industry leaders, and entrepreneurs, assessed the competition.
Master of Philosophy in Marketing student Fifi Liew was named the winner for her creative idea of ‘Gracefully Cleaned,’ a bath and toilet help for the elderly and disabled.
Liew expressed her delight upon winning the competition’s grand prize.
“My grandmother, who has required geriatric care for several years, inspired the product idea.
“I hope that one day my product will eventually benefit those with mobility issues,” she said.
Liew will represent Curtin Malaysia as a regional finalist in the virtual Curtin Global Pitching Competition Finale on May 25.
The winners will get scholarships to Curtin’s Ignition Programme as well as AUD6,000 in travel aid towards the cost of attending the programme in Perth.
For the record, the competition will also see students from Curtin campuses in Australia, Dubai, Malaysia, Mauritius, Singapore and Sri Lanka pitch their innovative ideas to a global audience in the finale.
