KUCHING: Students in Satok constituency who intend to continue their studies at private institutions of higher learning (IPTS) are encouraged to apply for financial assistance.

Satok assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki said it is to assist students, particularly those who are unable to purchase necessities and pay admission fees.

“This assistance has been provided for a long time, ever since the former Satok assemblyman, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, became the people’s representative here.

“We provide a number of special grants for the purpose of helping our children continue their studies to a higher level.

“The grants are provided to also alleviate the burden on students who enter IPTS for the first time, allowing them to purchase essentials such as flight tickets and pay fees while waiting for scholarships or other educational loans,” he explained.

He said this in his speech to 50 recipients at Chung Hua No. 4 Secondary School today (Jan 18) during the Gong Xi Fatt Cai 2023 Donation Programme.

Commenting further, he said the bursary is open to B40 or M40 students whose parents are registered voters in Satok.

“This is because we understand that there are some students who are interested in continuing their studies but cannot afford it because they face financial problems for first time admission.

“The main issue is a lack of pocket money for various needs, including paying fees, so this donation is also an encouragement and motivation for them to study hard and become successful, hence alleviating their lives and that of their families,” he said.

Meanwhile, he encouraged students to continue their studies in high-impact fields that can help Sarawak achieve the status of a developed region.

“Take high-impact majors such as oil and gas because the government also provides educational scholarships in these fields to meet the needs of the industry.

“It’s critical because Sarawak requires expert human capital as well as a highly skilled professional workforce that can meet the needs of the current market, as a continuation of the country’s leadership in the future,” he said.
