KUCHING: A Universiti Malaysia Sarawak graduate who majors in marketing, Mohd Noor Kamaruddin Wahi, 33, used to work for ten companies before.

One day, he decided to venture into the field of furniture making because of his deep interest in carpentry and has not looked back yet.

“When I worked for the companies, I did not find satisfaction in the jobs until I chose to explore the world of carpentry,” he said.

Noor has registered his furniture business, Gazwah Company, which has been running since September last year.

“In the beginning, I only did floor installation work. I started taking orders to make furniture after the movement control order (MCO) in April last year.

“Armed with my existing skills, I began to focus on making furniture in addition to doing old work in other fields,” he said.

Commenting on the capital needed to make his furniture, Noor explained that it depended on the advance payment of a customer.

“The customers’ responses are very encouraging because many people need carpentry services not only to improve the layout in their houses but also to add to their collection of homemade furniture,” he added.

Noor said the prices he offered were also much lower than those of other furniture makers as he was still new in the field.

“The prices of furniture depend on the types of design, size and materials used.

“So far, highly demanded are medium-sized tables, dining tables and other furniture according to the customers’ choices.

“Usually, I do not define any concept for the production of furniture.

“I just follow the customers’ ideas and try to realise their dream furniture designs,” he said.

Noor added his customers came from as far as Samarahan and Sarikei and that his delivery charges ranged from RM50 to RM300.

“I always make sure that the end products are of good quality despite the low prices I charge my customers.

“Most customers prefer to solve their problems with the services of carpenters like me because the results are more accurate and can be produced according to their wishes,” he said.

Noor considered the Covid-19 pandemic as a blessing in disguise for him because of the increased number of customers he had throughout the implementation period of movement restriction.

“Not all customers like new items. In fact, some are interested in using old wood materials to make furniture,” he added.

Noor said even though his business only operated entirely from home, he still earned a decent income.

Despite facing various challenges in carpentry, he hoped to expand the furniture business to the next level.
