Fined for crashing into cop car to evade arrest

KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here fined a local man RM3,500 in default five months in prison for crashing into a police vehicle to evade arrest in a drug-related case.

Kenny Chiew Chung Sieng, 35, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali to the charge under Section 186 of the Penal Code.

If convicted, he can be sentenced to prison for a term up to two years or fined up to RM10,000 or both.

Chiew is charged with obstructing a civil servant from carrying out his duties at Jalan Matang-Batu Kawa around 10.10 am on June 24.

Based on the case facts, a Padawan police team raided a residence in Taman Exodus and arrested Chiew on suspicion of being involved in drug activities.

Inspections were carried out in the residence but no prohibited items were found. When questioned, he admitted to abusing syabu and keeping the substance in his pick-up truck.

He was escorted to the vehicle where the drugs were allegedly stored but, Chiew managed to break free from the policeman’s hold and got into the vehicle to escape.

He then rammed the vehicle into the police car, causing damages to the front and back of the police car. However, his escape attempt was unsuccessful as he was swiftly captured.

Investigations revealed that Chiew had obstructed a civil servant from carrying out his duties during the police investigation.

Insp Ammarsoffi Yusoff prosecuted the case, while Chiew was unrepresented by counsel.
