SIBU: A 36-year-old man was fined RM1,500, in default three months’ imprisonment by the Magistrate’s Court here today for unlawful possession of identification cards belonging to two others.

When the charge was read and explained to Timothy James from Saratok, he understood and the consequences of maintaining his guilty plea before Magistrate Mohd Syukri Mokhtar.

The charge sheet stated that the accused was in possession of two identification cards which belonged to two other persons, without reasonable ground, at Christian Cemetery, Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce Road on April 8 at about 7.40pm.

The offence, punishable under Regulation 25(1(o) of National Registration Regulations 1990, provides for an imprisonment term of up to three years or fine of RM20,000 or both if convicted.

According to Prosecuting Officer Insp Badrul Iskandar Selamat when outlining the brief facts of case, while patrolling on April 8 at about 7.40pm, a police team came across a man at Christian Cemetery, Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce Road.

Upon checking on him, he was found with two pieces of identification cards belonging to two other persons.

He was subsequently placed under arrest for failing to give reasonable explanation for possessing them.

Police investigation revealed that the accused was arrested for having two pieces of identity cards not belonging to him.

The accused had failed to give reasonable explanation of possessing the items which were not belonging to him.

He was ordered to serve the default sentence as he could not pay the fine.
